Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Miriam Joanna 26, a talented photographer whose path in life has been nothing short of remarkable. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing authenticity and finding support from powerful women along the way. Miriam’s journey began after completing high school in Vienna, Austria in 2015, when she made a bold decision to take a year off before pursuing her dream of becoming a pilot. Little did she know that this time off would lead her on an incredible adventure that would forever change her perspective.
NÆ | LU: Miriam, could you share with us how your life transformed during your time in Hawaii?
Miriam: Absolutely. Hawaii was a turning point for me. The culture there celebrated authenticity and acceptance, which was a stark contrast to the societal expectations I had experienced before. It shifted my perception of what truly mattered in life. I realized that I no longer needed to define myself through work or education. Instead, I embraced the freedom to be my authentic self.
NÆ | LU: That’s truly inspiring. During your artistic journey, did you ever imagine that photography could become a viable career?
Miriam: Photography had always been a means of self-expression for me, but I never thought it could be more than a personal passion. However, everything changed when I received an incredible opportunity to work with a renowned surf sports brand. That experience opened my eyes to the possibilities of turning my passion into a profession. It ignited a newfound determination within me and paved the way for exciting opportunities that followed.
NÆ | LU: It sounds like that opportunity was a game-changer. Can you tell us more about how it propelled your career forward?
Miriam: Absolutely. The photography gig I received from the surf sports brand was a turning point in my career. It opened doors to new connections and opportunities. As a result, I had the privilege to interview influential women in the surf industry, such as Bethany Hamilton, Tatiana West, and Alana Blanchard. Each experience further fuelled my passion and inspired me to continue on this path.
NÆ | LU: Miriam, your journey is not only impressive but also a testament to the power of female empowerment. Can you share more about how supporting each other and the strong people in your life have influenced your path?
Miriam: Certainly. The support of women has played a significant role in shaping my journey. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have encountered remarkable humans who have supported, inspired, and uplifted me. They have shown me the strength that lies within us when we come together and support one another. From the women I’ve interviewed in the surf industry to the collaboration with NÆ | LU, these experiences have reinforced the importance of building a community of like-minded individuals who empower each other.
It’s not about competing with one another but rather about lifting each other up and celebrating each other’s successes. The support and encouragement I’ve received from women have given me the confidence to pursue my dreams, take risks, and embrace new opportunities. They have shown me that success is not limited to a specific persona but is attainable for all of us, as long as we remain true to ourselves and support each other along the way.
NÆ | LU: That’s incredibly inspiring. How do you envision your photography and work contributing to female empowerment and inspiring others?
Miriam: Through my photography, I strive to capture the essence, strength and diversity of women. I want to showcase their power, resilience, and unique stories. By highlighting their achievements and showcasing their talents, I hope to inspire others to chase their dreams fearlessly and embrace their true selves. I believe that by sharing the stories and achievements of inspiring women, we can break down barriers, challenge societal norms, and create a more inclusive and empowering environment for everyone.
I also aim to create a sense of connection and community through my work. By collaborating with like-minded individuals and supporting their endeavors, we can amplify each other’s voices and create a collective impact. Through my lens, I want to convey the message that we are all capable of greatness and that by supporting and uplifting one another, we can achieve remarkable things.
NÆ | LU: Your dedication to female empowerment is truly commendable. What advice would you give to young women who may be hesitant to pursue their passions or face societal pressures?
Miriam: My advice would be to trust yourself and your instincts. Don’t let societal pressures or expectations define your path. Embrace your passions wholeheartedly and pursue them with determination. Surround yourself with a supportive network of individuals who believe in you and uplift you. Remember that setbacks and challenges are part of the journey, but they don’t define your worth or potential. Stay true to yourself, be resilient, and never be afraid to take risks and embrace new opportunities. And above all, always support and uplift others. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels empowered to chase her dreams and make a positive impact.
NÆ | LU: Thank you, Miriam, for sharing your empowering perspective and insights. Your journey and dedication to female empowerment serve as an inspiration to all. We wish you continued success in your photography career and your ongoing efforts to uplift women.
Miriam: Thank you. It has been a pleasure to share my thoughts and experiences. I hope that through our collective efforts, we can inspire more women to embrace their passions, support one another, and create a world where gender equality and empowerment are the norm. Together, we can achieve great things.
